92.5 || April 23, 2007

I just tuned in. Ryan Adams, John Mellencamp, Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Jack Ingram all in a row? Forget the national exposure that 92.5 KZPS has garnered for today's changes in radio advertising--this whole deal is apparently a desperate attempt to lure Dallas' frat boys back to radio. Figure it won't be long before Ian Moore is bellowing "Jesus crossed the Rio Grande!" on Dallas airwaves again.

A change to 92.5 is all well and good, but this format appears to still be terribly dependent on years-old hits. Local radio sucks because it's given up on adventurous program directors who find the best in new music. While this format has potential for blending in newer alt- and Texas-country artists...time will have to tell if that potential is realized, or if Clear Channel depends on its market research bullshit, plays another Stevie Ray Vaughan solo and continues to roll the same ol' shitstick. -SM

They have played Drive By Truckers, old 97s, Whiskeytown and Slobberbone today.

Sure, its mixed in with Gregg Alman and CCR, but dont be so grumpy.

Update!
Listened to it on the drive home.... here is the track list:

Ryan Adams - Firecracker
Little Feat - Willin'
Bob Dylan - Gotta Serve Somebody
Cross Canadian ragweed - Look at me
----stopped to get some cat food---
Chris Rea - texas
Mickey and the Motorcars - Careless
ZZ Top - Thank You
Marshall Tucker Band - Take the Highway

Sure, Cross Canadia and Chirs Rea are cringe inducing, but props for the early Little Feat track (anything besides dixie chicken really...) good Ryan and Boob tracks, and the flute breakdown after the first chorus of the MTB song.

Best station ever?
of course not, but not that bad either...

Agreed, JH.
Sammie, you gotta listen to more than four songs before you stage a protest!

Bob Dylan's "Someday Baby" made me all sorts of happy. And yes, Slobberbone. And the Boss.

And I secretly hope they don't stop playing Boston for some inexplicable reason.

Yeah, as I was listening yesterday I thought to myself "Man, I hope they find a way to keep stranglehold into the quarter-hourly rotation."

quarter-hourly?
quad-hourly?

After a full day of listening, I stand by my previous stance. Just because good songs are working their way into the playlist doesn't change the fact that this station currently doesn't seem well-equipped to make room for up-and-coming acts. The "it was an oldies station" argument is bupkiss in light of this format switch, and truly "outlaw" country is about the best of the young kids coming out of the woodwork. Specialty nighttime shows (Tuesday night rockabilly, Sunday night local) would help, for starters, but I doubt Clear Channel's ability to do anything that rocks the boat here.

Sam--

"Truly 'Outlaw' country" is Waylon and Willie and the boys, no way around it. They were awesome. The whole "outlaw" schtick needs to stay in the '70s though, so please don't ask anyone to start using it again to promote young artists. Radio is dead but this station is better than most. Lose the white blues and it's perfectly listenable.

Sure, but they're not playing that era/style of music all day...furthermore, by either of our definitions, the word is being co-opted by Clear Channel for the sake of sticking thumbs up our asses and feeding us a bunch of Creedence. Honestly, I'm most interested in how the station pans out in the coming weeks once DJs actually come back on the air. Fuck the auto-DJ machine.

What the fuck is wrong with Creedence?

P.S. That rug really tied the room together.
